Branding Day

Branding day comes once a year, but for some reason this is the first time I was a spectator/helper (I did open the gate for their burned buns to run through to safety after all). I am not the biggest fan of the roping, pulling, take down, burning method of branding the cows - I would prefer to see them all lined up and calmly prance through the shoot, get poked with the hot iron and walk on their merry way, but that idea tends to get an eye roll from those know-it-all cowboys...apparently my movie screen version doesn't exactly work as I imagine.

The entire day was spent wrestling, pulling, prodding and tormenting the cows - and they saved the final (and smallest) cow for the end - for Jaxon. Here are some photos...enjoy!

Taking a break from the hard work for a little fun.

That's what ya get!

YEEOUCH!

If I look at you with these eyes can you get me out of this??

Jaxon's turn!

Checking out his cow...so loving.

This is, by far, my favorite photo of all time!!!

Riding off into the sunset - see the
biggest horse on the left? That's my boy!

He's 5!!!!

Jax turned 5 last month and we celebrated with a carnival birthday party at the outdoor soccer field. Most of the kids from his school came and with the help of about everyone I know, we pulled it off and had a blast!

Here are some pics and a video of the pinata at the end! Enjoy!!!

Yummy cake - thank you MIMA!!!!

A big, huge, enormous THANK YOU to everyone who came to help me - I couldn't have done it without all my wonderful volunteers (who really didn't have a choice in the matter - we were offering tortiburguesas after all)! Much love to you all!!!

Graduation Day

Each year, Jaxon's school hosts a graduation ceremony for the entire class. It usually consists of starting painfully late, sitting through several country, province, town and school songs, flag ceremonies, speeches, squirming children, odd performances and finally...food.

This year was no exception - but the kids were so damned cute you couldn't help but enjoy yourself (and we had the iPod to entertain Riley and Aaron so they were happy too!).

The squirming children were rewarded with toys and food, all the tables had a bucket of candy, and everyone left happy.

Here is Jax in his elf costume.

Super excited about his new ears!

Super excited about the bowl of chocolate!

Each child was introduced...one.at.a.time.
Jax entertained the crowd with a splendid bow.

All the little munchkins (in this age group)

The kids and their families watching the show... dancing and singing along.

The show - two elves, a princess and a...yeah I don't know what he is supposed to be.

The end.

A Family Tradition

When we were kids, my cousins and I used to help our Grandpa make popcorn balls every Halloween for the trick-or-treaters and sometimes for Christmas. It was so much fun watching him pour the hot marshmallows over the giant cast iron bowl full of freshly popped popcorn (which I don't recommend dropping on your foot, it will give you a black and blue toenail for a week before it falls off completely), stick his arms in up to his elbows to mix it all up, while sitting there not-so-patiently in anticipation of dipping our own hands in to start making the balls.

After Grandpa passed, we decided to keep the tradition going and each take turns making popcorn balls for the rest of the group. Some years it happens, some years it doesn't, but when it does...it's a really great thing.

This year my cousins Sarah, Jane and I decided to make popcorn balls and share the tradition with our kiddos. They had a lot of fun getting nice and sticky, and we had a lot of fun reminiscing and enjoy our far too rare family gatherings.

You too can make popcorn balls a new family tradition!

1/3 stick butter
1 bag large marshmallows
2 bags popped micro popcorn OR about 8-10 cups air popped corn.
Food coloring of your choice

This is basically like making rice krispie treats but you use popcorn instead of cereal.

1. Melt your butter in a large bowl in the microwave
2. Add the bag of marshmallows to the melted butter and stir them up.
3. Melt the marshmallows until smooth, removing from micro to stir every 45 seconds or so
4. Stir in food coloring of your choice. Photos below are the neon colors, very fun!
5. After your popcorn is popped, put in large bowl while attempting to keep the seeds apart from the popped corn. (i.e. you really don't want to be responsible for breaking a loved ones tooth).
6. Pour hot colored marshmallow goo over popcorn and stir with a large spatula or wooden spoon. Make sure you stir it well and get all the goo that has fallen to the bottom of the bowl.
7. Put some water in a separate bowl and dip your hands in - with wet hands, grab a handful of popcorn and squeeze into balls.
8. Lather, dip, repeat.
9. Place balls on wax or parchment paper to cool/dry. Once cool, place in baggies and give to everyone you know - they will love you for it!! (Or you can do what we did and just eat them all day, not share with anyone, and end the day with a stomach ache when the karma takes effect).

Enjoy!!

Catch up

Okay so maybe I have been a huge slacker and haven't updated my blog in quite some time. And maybe there are several other blog posts of mine that start like this. BUT - I'm here now, so quit your crying.

When we were in the states we took a bunch of photos of Jax and his cousins out at my cousin Jane's house...or Sarah (my other cousin) did anyway. They turned out so great and I just wanted to share a few!

Now THOSE are some cute kids!

Jax and the climbing wall...

We took Jaxon to the new Rec Center and he got to try out the climbing wall! Since he has already zip lined twice (once by himself) we knew he would love it! He had a blast, went up three times (three different sides of the wall) and did awesome on the rappel down as well, a natural I tell ya!! Next it's my turn!!!

Gearing up to go!

The first trip up, got about 1/2 way up the wall!

Rapelling down!
